Porter Protection

Far Frontiers Expeditions supports the aims of the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG), and our partners in the Himalaya and Central America adhere to its set of guidelines.

IPPG works to improve the conditions of mountain porters in the tourism industry worldwide.  IPPG's aim is for every porter to have:

• Access to adequate clothing, boots, shelter and food (appropriate to the altitude and weather)
• Medical care when ill or injured
• Insurance

Unfortunately although these aims appear totally reasonable, they do cost money, so there is always more work for IPPG to do.  In Nepal, for example, unscrupulous operators or trekkers (who may hire porters direct in country), will often choose the porter with the lowest prices.  This may well result in the porter without insurance 'winning' the work.
