“In 1995 I escorted Sir Fitzroy Maclean, author of Eastern Approaches, to Georgia for a reunion with President Eduard Shevardnadze. In the same year I took him to Tibet to gather notes for the last chapter of his planned book, Far Frontiers. Sadly this was never completed before his death, but its name lives on as an inspiration.”
Christopher Short
Managing Director, Far Frontiers Expeditions
Far Frontiers Ltd was founded in 1996 by Christopher Short. Far Frontiers Expeditions now offer expertly run expeditions which allow travellers to explore with individuality. We don't offer rigid, pre-packaged expeditions, we use tried and tested expedition elements as a foundation to build 'one of a kind' expeditions for a specific group. We've found that adapting to our clients' needs results in a much richer experience all around.
In a travel world currently characterised by massive businesses and acquisitions, we are proud that we continue to operate from our offices in the Cotswolds as a specialist tour operator which is family owned and run. We have a wealth of travel knowledge, and work together with personally chosen expert local partners to ensure that you have the wonderful travel experience you deserve.
A Far Frontiers expedition is the ultimate blend of personal challenge and reward for even the most experienced travellers.
What differentiates us?
We are the official provider of tours for the Royal Geographical Society with IBG (Institute of British Geographers). This is an incredibly prestigious and coveted position and no other company has ever had this privilege.
We have been chosen to provide the support for the successful Spring 2008 British Military Makalu Expedition carrying out the very first Makalu traverse, after our previous successful attempt on Everest by the Royal Marines in 2003. From Rugby tours for the British Lions, to organising the youngest Brits ever to attempt Aconcagua, and the youngest Brits above camp 2 on the North Ridge of Everest, we have a wide range of expertise.
We are also the first Approved Activity Provider (AAP) for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.
Responsible Travel & The Environment
Far Frontiers Expeditions is committed, through our policies and practices, to responsible tourism. Our policies aim to ensure that we and our clients act in a way which is socially, environmentally and culturally sound. We strongly believe all tour operators should contribute positively to the communities they visit, protect the envrionment by minimising pollution, and respect local traditions, religion and heritage. We tread lightly - low volume, low impact trekking/touring is the best way of preserving the beautiful and fragile places we visit.
We lead by example, and aim both to educate expeditioners about the impact of tourism and to develop their cultural sensitivity. We hope that by visiting and supporting a local economy in a sensitive manner we can make a positive contribution to those local people. As an example, our schools expeditions usually involve a community or school project that positively impacts the young people in these villages.
Porter Protection
Far Frontiers Expeditions is a member of Tourism Concern and supports the aims of the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG), and adhere to a set of guidelines. All porters on our treks are provided with insurance, shoes and waterproof clothing. We also follow the Himalayan Tourist Code.
