George Band

GEORGE BAND OBE

"George Band OBE, Chairman, Far Frontiers Expeditions sadly died on 26 August 2011 aged 82. Everyone who has ever come into contact with George via association with Far Frontiers Expeditions, be it our staff, clients and the teams of Sherpas and guides around the world have been moved by his caring interest, kindness, humility and gentlemanly manner. George has been with the Company since incorporation in 2000 and has led numerous expeditions to Nepal so many have enjoyed visiting the place and the people that he loved. He hosted many of our successful client evenings, I remember him taking off his shoes and joining me on a table in an over-packed Mayfair art gallery to talk to the assembled at our launch party and he totally entered into the spirit and made the evening memorable. George had a very special place in my heart, always supportive he treated me at times like a son. Molly our adorable Gordon Setter came from one of George and Susan’s breeding litters. It was always a pleasure to visit George for a session in his study going over plans for his next expedition with us, or talking to groups of friends and clients after a lunch party to brief them in detail before a trip. He introduced me to the Alpine Club and the Geographical Club and the Royal Geographical Society. George was an inspiration and I am very proud to call him a friend. I join those from all corners of the globe and from all manner of backgrounds who celebrate his life and pass heartfelt condolences to his wife Susan and his close family."

George Band OBE (Chairman 2000-2011)

George Band was Chairman of Far Frontiers Expeditions Ltd. He has escorted many of our adult tours, including Bhutan in 2006 and Nepal Annapurna in 2009.

At the age of 24, he was the youngest member of the first successful Everest Expedition in 1953 led by Colonel John Hunt (later Lord Hunt) when Hillary and Tenzing reached the summit on 29th May just before the Coronation. Two years later with Joe Brown he was the first to climb Kangchenjunga, the world's third highest peak, then the highest unclimbed.

In 1957, he began an international career with the Royal Dutch/Shell Group. He continues to enjoy modest climbing and escorting treks for 'Far Frontiers Expeditions' in the greater ranges, having recently visited India, Nepal, Sikkim, China, Tibet and Bhutan. Since the mid-1980s he has been Chairman of the Mount Everest Foundation, President of the Alpine Club, on the Council of the Royal Geographical Society and President of the British Mountaineering Council. In September 2003, he succeeded George Lowe as Chairman of the Himalayan Trust UK.

In May 2003, his book 'Everest: 50 Years on Top of the World' written specially for the Mount Everest Foundation to mark the Everest Jubilee, was published by HarperCollins and immediately became a best seller! A paperback edition entitled 'Everest Exposed' was published in April 2005. This was followed in October 2006 by 'SUMMIT: 150 Years of the Alpine Club' to mark the 150th Anniversary of the Alpine Club, the world's first mountaineering club, which was founded in 1857.

George and his wife, Susan, lived in Hampshire and they have three grown up children and five grandchildren.
